Notes

Recently I heard City of New Orleans on a Pandora station and I realized it must be in my top 100. As I listened to the words I realized that this song is really about America.

Riding on a train starting in Chicago then going through the countryside of Tennessee, Mississippi and then ending in New Orleans. What's more American than that?

Yes, it's sung by hippie pot smoking Arlo Guthrie. But it's all about going through the heartland of this great country and seeing all of the diversity.

This song is written by Steve Goodman, another great folksinger who died tragically at age 36 in 1984 only days before he was to sing the national anthem for his beloved Chicago Cubs. See a link to A Dying Cub Fan's Last Request below.

This song was used on Good Morning, America as the uplifting chorus line is irresistable.

Good morning America how are ya?
Don't you know me I'm your native son
I'm the train they call The City of New Orleans
I'll be gone five hundred miles when the day is done
