I like everyone else who grew up with this song have puzzled about who Carly Simon is singing about. The words "You're so vain, you probably think this song is about you" were meant to puzzle everyone and Simon made the intrigue more interesting by never publically saying it was about one specific lover, so the choices were many including Warren Beatty, Mick Jaggar, and Cat Stevens.
